The Doctor Mary Burns Cup, donated by her husband Gerry and the family was awarded to Luiseach Mathers. The Principal referred to Dr Burn’s absolute passion for All Ability Education. Throughout her years as a governor, she was a strong advocate of pupils from across the ability spectrum, emphasising the need to challenge and stretch truly gifted and talented pupils as well as encouraging and getting the very best from pupils who faced real difficulty at school.

‘Luiseach is the highest achieving pupil we have ever had in Cross and Passion. Although she achieved 10A* grades here in Cross and Passion this year, she already had an A* in Irish which she achieved in Primary 7 at Gaelscoil an Chaistil. In addition to that she achieved an A* in A level Irish as a Year 10 pupil.’

The principal who nominated Luiseach for this very special award in memory of Dr Burns, referred to Luiseach’s special qualities. ‘Luiseach is undoubtedly a gifted young lady, however she matches that with determination and hard work. She is also extremely generous in sharing her talents in debating, music and sport with the school community – she thrives on getting involved.’
